Classify the actual purchase or sale
Manitoba’s general RST rate is 7%, calculated before GST. Applicable Manitoba GST is generally 5%, while zero-rated, exempt and out-of-province transactions require their own review. We record the product or service, location and supporting exemption evidence so tax codes reflect the transaction rather than a customer’s industry label.
Reconcile the two accounts independently
We connect sales reports, supplier tax amounts, adjustments and payments to their respective accounts. Eligible GST input tax credits require supporting records. RST paid on business purchases is not a GST input tax credit. Any RST self-assessment question is tracked separately for review, including taxable services purchased without provincial tax.
Illustrative example: a fully taxable local purchase
For a $2,000 item confirmed taxable at both standard Manitoba rates, GST is $100 and RST is $140, producing a $2,240 invoice. We preserve each component rather than recording one combined tax figure. Whether any GST is recoverable depends on the purchaser’s registration, use and documentation.
Prepare a clear review package
The close includes balances, unusual tax codes, unsupported exemptions and remittances awaiting confirmation. Our tools can help estimate separate cash reserves after you supply reviewed inputs. Filing authority and the treatment of unusual contracts are agreed explicitly; a calculator cannot decide whether an item qualifies for a farm exemption or another special rule.
Questions about this work
Can we subtract GST credits from our RST payment?
No. These are separate tax systems and accounts; eligible GST credits belong in the GST calculation.
Do all Manitoba businesses charge the same taxes?
No. Registration, the supply, customer use, location and specific exemptions can change the treatment.
